Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and eMail Spam

The landscape has changed since I last threw around my opinions on this blog. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and a host of others exploded across the Internet. Now we can remain in 24/7 touch with myriads of folks who never gave us the time of day in school but desire to collect us as “Friends” now.

And with this new media comes more channels to funnel ads, email (wanted and unwanted) streaming videos and the general minutia of some long lost relative’s day to day living into our consciousness. So here we go…

First, Twitter adds to volumes to your mailbox… “Twitter set to spam your inbox with added notifications” and “Twitter is rolling out an email notification that lets you know if someone you follow retweets or favorites one of your Tweets". This adds to the usual Twitter notifications.

Now, let’s throw that social darling Facebook into the email spam fray… “Has your Facebook wall ever been flooded with spam? Have you ever realized with horror that your profile has been spamming your entire Friends list?

And of course the tried and true “Porn Spam” is still alive and well…. “Harvard tackles porn spam on Web site”. Somewhere, someone still clicks on this stuff and someone probably always will.

So maybe the old saying referencing “Build A Better Mousetrap” should somehow be recycled to “Build a New Social Interface and Spam Will Come”. Spam has expanded beyond just the office email, and so has the fight to stop it.

Later all...

This is the reason why I always turn off all the email notifications in the settings of all social networking sites I am joining to. In that way, I will never receive any email notifications from these websites.
